Fleet Maintenance Technician III – Diesel Mechanic G14

This is a Full-time position in Columbus, GA posted June 23, 2021.

Major Duties and Responsibilities Benefits Supplemental QuestionsCoordinates with Emergency Services to repair equipment. Designs and fabricates devices and parts for trucks that cannot be purchased or that may enhance unit productivity. Sets up annual pump testing to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. Coordinates with outside vendors to perform annual aerial device certification tests. Repairs fire pumping systems, fire equipment nozzles and ground equipment, brake valves, steering and suspension, fuel systems, lighting systems, charging systems, heating and air conditioning, and coolant systems. Travels to workstations to perform repairs on site or to other remote locations as needed. Assists other technicians with electric controls, repairs on the computer, and the proper use of test equipment. Coordinates with outside vendors on specifications for new equipment and the procurement of parts needed to perform repairs, places orders with outside vendors. Maintains files and records of repairs, maintenance, and certification on fire and EMS equipment. Supervises state and county inmates. Works on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Removes and installs engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, hydraulic cylinders and pumps. Performs preventive maintenance. Road tests vehicles. Maintains and calibrates shop tools and equipment. Gives safety classes, trains other technicians in troubleshooting and repairs. Completes service orders, records labor and parts used on vehicles and equipment. Performs the duties of the supervisor in his or her absence. Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of truck service and repairs, air conditioning system repairs, advanced electrical repairs, and generator maintenance and repairs. Knowledge of the operation and use of vehicles, software diagnosing systems, hydraulic systems, and aerial work units. Knowledge of federal laws and guidelines covering equipment. Knowledge of basic mathematics. Knowledge of diagnostic equipment and procedures. Skill in reading and understanding technical manuals. Skill in the operation of computers. Skill in oral and written communication.Minimum Educational and Training Requirements:Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain avalid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department which is normally six months but may be altered.Physical Requirements:The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
